When I learned the U.S. State birds, I found the following to
be useful. As you can see, it helps to know geography.

The Mockingbird is the official bird of the
Southern states of
Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
The Cardinal is the official birds of the
Middle Eastern states of
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and
West Virginia.
The Western Meadowlark is official bird of the
Western Plains states of
Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming.
It is also the official bird of Oregon.
The Chickadee is the official bird of the
Northeastern states of Maine and Massachusetts.
The Robin is the official bird of the
Northern states of Connecticut, Michigan
and Wisconsin.
The Common Loon is the official bird of the
state of Minnesota and of the Canadian
province of Ontario.
Minnesota and Ontario share a border.
Also, the Loon is on the Canadian One Dollar coin.
The Oriole is the official bird of
Maryland. Baltimore is the major city in Maryland.
The Baltimore baseball team is called the
Baltimore Orioles.
The Brown Thrasher is the official bird of
Georgia. Atlanta is the major city in Georgia.
The Atlanta NHL Hockey team is called the Thrashers.
The Blue Hen Chicken is the official bird of
Delaware. Delaware is the "Blue Hen" state.
Also, the nickname of the University of Delaware is the
Blue Hens.
Many people in Colorado love baseball so much that they
demolished attendance records for a first year baseball team.
Bunting is something that happens in baseball. The state
bird of Colorado is the
Lark Bunting.
OK, that's a strange way to remember it, but it works for me!
The Rhode Island Red is the official bird of
official bird of Rhode Island. The obvious way to remember it
is that the state's name is part of the bird's name.
The Great Carolina Wren is the official bird of
South Carolina. The obvious way to remember it
is that Carolina is part of the bird's name.
